What is Ayurveda? A Beginner's Guide to Ayurvedic Wellness

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic science of health and wellness originating in India over 5,000 years ago. The word Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit words — "Ayu" meaning life, and "Veda" meaning knowledge — loosely translating to "the knowledge of life." Ayurveda teaches that true wellness comes from living in harmony with nature, understanding your unique body type, and making mindful choices about food, lifestyle and daily routines.

Unlike modern medicine which often treats symptoms in isolation, Ayurveda takes a whole-person approach — considering the mind, body and spirit as interconnected. It is one of the world's oldest continuously practiced systems of medicine and remains deeply embedded in everyday life across India and increasingly around the world.

What are the three doshas?

The three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — are the fundamental bio-energies that govern all physical and mental functions in the body according to Ayurveda. Every person is born with a unique combination of all three doshas, with one or two typically dominant. Understanding your dosha helps you make better choices about what to eat, how to exercise, and how to manage stress.

The three doshas are each composed of two of the five elements — space, air, fire, water and earth — and each governs specific functions in the body and mind.

What is Vata dosha?

Vata dosha is the energy of movement and is composed of the elements of space and air. It governs all movement in the body — from breathing and circulation to nerve impulses and the flow of thoughts. People with a dominant Vata constitution tend to be creative, quick-thinking and energetic when in balance, and anxious, scattered or fatigued when out of balance.

Vata is cool, dry, light and mobile. To balance Vata, Ayurveda recommends warm, grounding and nourishing foods and routines — like warm herbal teas, cooked grains and regular sleep schedules.

What is Pitta dosha?

Pitta dosha is the energy of transformation and is composed of the elements of fire and water. It governs digestion, metabolism, body temperature and the transformation of food into energy. People with a dominant Pitta constitution tend to be focused, driven and confident when in balance, and irritable, inflamed or overly critical when out of balance.

Pitta is hot, sharp, light and oily. To balance Pitta, Ayurveda recommends cooling, calming and sweet foods — like rose tea, fennel, coriander and licorice root.

What is Kapha dosha?

Kapha dosha is the energy of structure and stability and is composed of the elements of earth and water. It governs the body's physical form, lubrication of joints, immune function and emotional stability. People with a dominant Kapha constitution tend to be calm, loving and grounded when in balance, and lethargic, congested or resistant to change when out of balance.

Kapha is heavy, slow, cool and oily. To balance Kapha, Ayurveda recommends warming, stimulating and light foods — like ginger, tulsi, gymnema and spiced teas.

What does tridoshic mean?

Tridoshic means suitable for all three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. A tridoshic herb, food or practice is considered universally balancing and beneficial regardless of your dominant dosha. Tridoshic ingredients are particularly valued in Ayurveda because they can be used by everyone without risk of aggravating any dosha.

Common tridoshic herbs and spices include coriander, fennel, cardamom, chamomile and licorice root. CCF Tea — made with cumin, coriander and fennel — is one of Ayurveda's most celebrated tridoshic blends.

What are the five elements in Ayurveda?

The five elements in Ayurveda — known as the Pancha Mahabhutas — are space (akasha), air (vayu), fire (agni), water (jala) and earth (prithvi). According to Ayurveda, everything in the universe including the human body is composed of these five elements in varying proportions.

The five elements combine to form the three doshas — Vata (space + air), Pitta (fire + water) and Kapha (earth + water) — and understanding the elemental composition of foods, herbs and lifestyle choices helps Ayurveda practitioners make recommendations that restore balance.

How does Ayurveda approach food and wellness?

Ayurveda views food as medicine — one of the most powerful tools for maintaining health and preventing imbalance. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all diet, Ayurveda recommends eating according to your dosha, the season and your current state of health.

Key Ayurvedic principles around food include:

Eat according to your dosha — foods that balance your dominant dosha support overall health and energy.

Favor whole, natural ingredients — minimally processed foods with recognizable ingredients are considered more sattvic (pure and balancing) than refined or artificial foods.

Consider the six tastes — Ayurveda recognizes six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent) and recommends including all six in daily meals for complete nourishment.

Eat seasonally — foods that grow in a particular season are considered naturally suited to the body's needs during that time.

Cook with intention — the energy and mindfulness brought to food preparation is considered part of its nourishing quality. At AyurSome Wellness, our makers meditate before starting work to create a peaceful and energetically clean production environment.
